Today we’re introducing most of you to a red wine you’ve probably never heard of before, from an up-and-coming wine region in Italy. Enjoy! We did.

The Wine: 2005 Grifalco Aglianico del Vulture2005GrifalcoAglianicodelVulture

The grape: Aglianico

The region: Venosa in Potenza, Italy

Travel Plus Wine Tasting Notes

First we poured the wine…

Color: Very dark red, almost black

Immediate sniff: Fruity smell- currents. Spices.

Then we swirled the wine…

Viscosity: Very good. On the heavy side.

Sniff with nose in glass: You can sniff the acidity and alcohol in this wine, but not in a bad way.

Then we took a sip, but didn’t swallow…

Thoughts: Oaky. Noting the tannins so characteristic of a dry wine. Super smooth. More than a slight hint of tobacco.

Finally, we sipped and swallowed…

**Final Thoughts: Now dubbed “The Italian Shocker” this wine is a great new discovery and perfect for those who love smooth, dry full-bodied reds.

Goes well with: Italian dishes such as lasagna or spaghetti. Red meats. Pairing with dark chocolate brings out the fruits in this wine and balances the dryness. Or, enjoy alone as a sipping wine.

(Price: we found this bottle for around $30)
