MountRushmoreSouthDakotaOne of the Top 10 American Landmarks of all time is Mount Rushmore, located near the town of Keystone, in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The giant head sculptures of former US presidents were carved by artist Gutzon Borglum.

But how did he choose which presidents to carve? The four presidents were selected because of the significance they played in American history:

George Washington represents the fight for independence; Thomas Jefferson for his ideas of human rights and a government by the people; Abraham Lincoln for his ideas on equality; and Theodore Roosevelt for leading the United States role in world affairs.

About 2 million people visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial annually.

And although it’s part of the National Park Service, having a National Park Pass doesn’t cover the parking fee of $10.
